PTSO Scholarship Opportunity

The South County High School PTSO is pleased to offer achievement-based scholarships to well-rounded graduating seniors pursuing full-time higher education at a two- or four-year college or university or technical/vocational institute. Award amounts will be $500 each.

All applications are reviewed anonymously by an impartial selection committee and are evaluated on the following criteria: academic and other achievement, extra-curricular activities, letter of recommendation, essay submission, community involvement, leadership, and overall quality of application.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Applicant must be a senior at South County High School graduating in June of the current academic year.
  • Minimum weighted GPA of 3.0
  • Student and/or student’s parent/guardian must be a paid member of the South County High School PTSO as of March 3, 2019.  To verify membership status, contact the Membership Chairperson: Priti Patel at socoptso@gmail.com.
  • Applicant must be accepted by a college or post-secondary institution at the time the scholarship is paid.
  • No preference will be given to applicants based on race, religion, nationality, gender, physical handicap, economic background, or length of time enrolled at South County High School.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Fully completed scholarship application must be typed and signed.
  • Personally written essay on the topic provided.  All essays must be typed, double spaced in 12 pt. Times New Roman font, on standard-sized white paper.  Essays should not exceed 300 words and should NOT include your name or other identifiers.  Content and grammar will both be a consideration in determining award recipients.
  • One letter of recommendation in a sealed and signed envelope (over the envelope flap).
  • Copy of 7-semester unofficial transcript listing all high school credits and grades through the first semester of senior year.
  • Fully completed applications and all related documents are due and must be postmarked by April 26, 2019.  Mail applications to:  Shelly Logar, ATTN:  PTSO Scholarship, 8337 Argent Circle, Fairfax Station, VA 22039.  Or you may hand-deliver the application to the scholarship administrator at the same address by 5:00pm on April 26, 2019.  Do not deliver applications to school.  Incomplete or late submissions will NOT be considered.

DISBURSEMENT OF AWARDS:

  • Scholarship winners will be announced at the Senior Awards Ceremony in May.
  • Payment of scholarship awards will be made directly to the student and are intended to be applied to tuition, room and board, books and/or any other college related expenses.
  • Scholarship awards will be submitted upon receipt of a copy of the school’s statement showing acceptance in an accredited institution. The student must provide the scholarship administrator with this verification by June 8, 2019.
